Potential Benefit of reducing fat around the stomach
In a latest one-month study conducted by researchers at the School of Health Sciences, University of Edinburgh, participants who consumed a bottle of pomgranate juice everyday were found to be less likely to develop fatty cells arpund their abdomen and also recorded lower blood pressure.
In the trial led by Dr Rmad Aldjali and Dr Catherine Tsang, 24 volunteers were given a 500ml bottle of pomrgranate juice to drink everyday for four weeks, At the end of the trial, nearly half of all volunteers had much ower levels of non-esterified fattyacids (or NEFA) and more than 90% of them had lower blood pressure.
The researchers believe that the results of thsi study indicates that pomegranate juice may lower the amount of NEFA in the blood, making it less likely to have fat stored around the stomach.
Previous studies in humans and animals have shown that high levels of NEFA are not only linked to a higher storage of fat around the abdomen, but also to an increased risk of heart disease and type II diabetes.
The researchers believe that pomegranate juice is beneficial in potentially reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases because the experiment results showed not only a reduced level of NEFA in the subjects of the study, but also significant and consistent lowering of blood pressure
